Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 is an arcade style driving game and the follow-up to the critically acclaimed and very successful original Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge.
In this game, the Esprit is joined by the Lotus Elan and there are changes to the game design as well. Rather than completing laps around a circuit, the game now contains stages that are point-to-point, with a time limit to get to checkpoints along the route. Sadly this has meant the loss of the innovative pitstop feature.
The eight stages cover a wide variety of different conditions, from snow to fog and storm to night driving and it is here that Lotus 2 excels. The variations in the conditions make each course drive differently from the last and is the feature that sets Lotus 2 apart from it's competitors.
The cars sound good and the background sounds on the courses add to the feel of the conditions. The game also features my personal favourite piece of introduction music on the Amiga. The only negative point with the sound occurs after a crash, the same metal clanging noise is used no matter what is hit. The conditions that are provided make for some attractive looking courses and the graphics are about as good as they come for this style of game.
The game does have it's downsides, for example in order to make each checkpoint it is likely you will have taken the lead before the halfway point, ending the contest as a race against other cars instead making it a race against the clock. The option of in-game music has been dropped although personally I prefer it that way.
Despite that, I still think Lotus 2 was the highlight of the series, being overall a better game than the first. It is quite rightly considered to be one of the best in the genre and comes highly recommended.
