TFX (Tactical Fighter eXperiment)

TFX (Tactical Flight eXperiment) is a realistic flight simulator, where you take on the role of a UN fighter pilot, flying various scenarios, with the ability to fly the F-117A, Eurofighter 2000 and F-22 Superstar aircraft.

Minimum System Requirements: AGA Amiga with 2MB Chipram.

Recommended System Requirements: AGA Amiga with 2MB Chipram, 4MB Fast Ram, 50Mhz 68030 CPU or better, and an HD with at least 10MB space free.

The Games history and eventual release

This game was originally scheduled for release by Ocean in 1994, but was later cancelled close to completion in 1995 due to the unstable Amiga market at the time, and the fact that the game required a system spec higher than the average Amiga at the time in order to run at a smooth framerate.

The UK Amiga magazine Cu Amiga later managed to secure the exclusive rights to publish the game, and so in 1997 the game finally saw an exclusive release on the CD edition of Cu Amiga magazine's October 1997 issue, number CUCD15. In addition readers of the floppy disk version of the magazine could order a 7 disk version of the game for £4 inc. p+p.

Different versions of the game

Included on the CU Amiga CD were 3 different versions of the game.

• TFX_68000 for AGA Amigas without an FPU.
• TFX_FPU for AGA Amigas with an FPU.
• TFX_040 for 040/060 CPU based AGA Amigas.

Bugs

The eventual Cu Amiga release of TFX was only about 95% complete. For this reason the game still did contain some bugs, incuding graphical glitches and some users reporting that the 040 CPU version would not run on their 040 equiped Amigas. In response to these bugs, in December 1997 the original developer of TFX, Charlie Wallace, released updates of the 3 different versions of the game executable for players to use. Two versions are included:

• TFX 020/030 FPU update - This is for AGA Amigas with an 020 or 030 CPU and a FPU installed.
• TFX 040 update - This is for AGA Amigas with an 040 CPU installed.
