Old school rulez!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful
Demo by The Special Brothers (what an inventive name) from Luxembourg which was coded by a good friend of mine, Zyriax. The demo is very basic with some old school amiga routines, but as I'm a bit retro and nostalgic, I appreciate the look of the whole.

I admit, the music is somewhat awful, and the graphics aren't the best seen around, but as mentioned before, this is very basic.

Hopefully Zyriax can keep his motivation up and continue with his coding work on the Classicamiga intro/demo. Otherwise I'll have to keep him motivated ;-)

Quite impressive 3D routines

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful
Having not seen this production before now I wasn't expecting much based on Demon's review. However on watching it I feel he was overly critical and many of the graphical routines impressed me, especially when you consider this is running on a standard A500.

I do however agree that there are some issues with it. Overall the design of the production isn't that great with no central theme or nice transitions leading you through the production from one effect to the next. In terms of design it feels more like an FX coding showcase, used to just display what the coder is capable of.

Also the music, while quite good, does get a bit repetitive and generic after 30 seconds. It also contains some parts that feel quite dark and don't really fit the demo. There are also some questionable notes/samples used towards the end that don't quite sound right.

In terms of actual coding and FX I gave both a high mark as they are technically well executed. The solid filled 3D is well done with smooth motion and rotation, and the 3D dot graphics are especially nice with the bouncing dot ball being my personal favourite part of the production, especially when it changes from all white dots to coloured dots, representing the flag colours of Luxembourg.

Another thing worth noting is the fractal generation within this production which was not seen that often in Amiga demos. There are a number of fractals generated and the routines are quite fast, and their generation is something I've always found interesting to watch.

So overall this is quite a technically well executed production, with smooth 3D routines and fractal generation, but it lacks production design with no central thread leading the viewer through the routines and no main theme. And the music, while not bad, is quite generic and doesn't really fit into the demo.

This production is however worth watching for its technically well executed coding of the 3D and fractal routines.

I was perhaps too critical, but I thought FX stood for sound FX, that's because I only gave it a 2. If something else is meant, I can still rectify that point.

EDIT:I just corrected this a bit, and also gave the music a 3 instead of a 2. As FX does not stand for audio FX, it did merit more than just a lousy 2 ;-)

One doesn't always have to agree about a production, as all people have different tastes. Although, I personally think this is quite a good demo. There are several reasons why I like it; The effects are particularly nice for example. The coding is well done, and everything runs smoothly on the Amiga 500. There are many different types of effects as well.

Also, I don't agree 100% about the music. Even if the music isn't as good as in many other demos, I think it's ok.

All in all, I enjoy watching this demo from TSB. smilies/smiley.gif

This is very true. Different people like different things and maybe both of us have been a bit too over critical. I did enjoy watching this demo because it is technically very impressive for an A500 demo with a lot of content and a large range of effects and different coding techniques which are very well executed and run very nicely on an A500.

For me though a good demo needs to be well produced with a central theme and musical score that both run throughout the whole production. Instead this is very bitty with each part feeling seperate with nothing linking them together or any common design elements shared between them. This makes the overall production feel more like a collection of demo routines rather than an interesting visual experience that leads you through a journey from one effect routine to the next.
