Ikari Warriors - Rambo anyone?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
As soon as you start this game up, you are accosted with images that instantly remind me of Rambo. The warriors, the weapons and bandanas....very suspicious. The game begins with a plane crash landing in the jungle behind enemy lines. Your objective, fight your way through the enemy and escape!

This is a top down 2D scroller. You must push through wave after wave of enemies to reach the end. You have a weapon that has a slow firing rate and also grenades. To survive, you must avoid contact with both the enemy and their fire. To destroy the enemy, they must be shot, or to destroy a large group of enemies, a grenade can be thrown in between them.

This game seems to be quite straightforward, but at times there are a large number of enemies running from all directions and stopping dangerously close to you. This makes attempted fast breaks towards the top of the screen almost impossible.

Graphics: Very basic, just basic landscapes, such as trees, mountains and rivers. It has a limited colour scheme, with only basic bold colours.

Sound: Has music playing in the background, which adds to the atmosphere. The sound effects include explosions and weapons discharging.

Gameplay: This is not just a run through, kill everything quickly type of game. It gives the impression that it is, but in reality it requires more strategy and reflexes. Dodging bullets and returning fire is the name of this game.

Lifespan: This game will take a while to complete, dying is very easy to accomplish. For this reason, there will be many times when you give up after dying. So coming back to play this game again and again is a real possibility.

Overall: This game is above average, with decent gameplay and lifespan. If you enjoy games such as bionic commando, you will find this game interesting. It also reminds me of Metal Gear, but with more shooting and explosions. If you like a challenge, check this game out.

Great fun multiplayer

At the time, Ikari Warriors was one of my favourite shoot em ups on the Amiga, after having been a firm favourite of mine in the arcades with the original 1986 SNK cabinet. The Amiga port was very faithful to the arcade original and retained its same level of difficulty and fun.

This game is definitely the most fun when played two player with a friend and this was the only way I ever managed to complete it.

The gameplay is very similar to a number of other top down run and gun style scrolling shooters. It is best described as a Commando clone, with inspiration taken mostly from the Rambo films of the time. So as Submeg mentioned, if you liked this style of game with some other examples being Leatherneck, Rambo and Dogs of War, then you will find this great fun.

Much like any good shoot em up, learning the attack waves and timing is the only way to get further in the game. And later towards the very end the level design does change, but I won't spoil that for you all.

Definitely a great game and well worth playing, especially if you have a friend to hand to help you out.

A piece of trivia; the two game characters Ralf Jones and Clark Steel later make an appearance as playable characters in the sixth Metal Slug game.
