Silkworm - Multiple angles, too many bullets

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful
Silkworm, is one addictive yet frustrating game. In it, you control a helicopter and your objective is to play through the numerous levels and the entire range of enemies. Having never reached the end of this game, I cannot say what the end looks like!

Many hours of sweat, tears and frustration (hopefully no blood) must be poured into the game with a steel like determination. Playing this on a real Amiga meant sweaty hands after about half an hour of gameplay, and usually the creaking of the joystick and flailing limbs results after your concentration becomes focused on the bullets being shot at you. If you can make it through to the eighth level, you are then on your own. If you lose three lives after this point, you are teleported back to the eighth level from where you have to make your way back towards your last destination.

This game is a nice shooter, with the first few levels being relatively easy and then you are given a shove into some more extreme tactical avoidance to dodge the flying barrage of bullets. There is a variety of opponents, all trying to contribute to your death. There are a different selection of flying opponents, each with their own weapons and flying patterns and also ground based vehicles. These enemies become more numerous as you progress through the levels and some even become more attacking as time passes. At the end of each level there is a boss, which alternates between an extremely large helicopter and tank. The helicopter is able to shoot large indestrctible missiles and the tank, if not destroyed quickly, goes into a mad shooting frenzy.

You are able to play as either a helicopter or jeep, or even play cooperatively with a friend. The number of enemies does not alter with a different selection of vehicle and it is quite easy to see that playing as the jeep in a one person game is extremely difficult. This game is most fun when played by two players.

Graphics: This game is a 2D sidescroller, so the developers of this game did not push the envelope when it came to the graphics. However, the solid nature of 2D scrollers at this time allowed them to concentrate on introducing a large number of objects from different angles and areas of the screen. This intensity of action allowed you to forget about the fact that it was not graphically challenging.

Sound: The sound is what to expect from a shooter, lots of explosions, and shooting sounds. The only music is contained within the title screen and it would have been nice if there was in game music.

Gameplay: The sheer intensity of this game keeps you engaged with this from the start until you run out of lives. The structured way in which the planes fly and the sheerly chaotic way in which single enemies enter the screen keep you alert and on your toes. There are many tactics that you could adopt, all with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Lifespan: This game is addictive. If you can't finish this game, then it will last a long time, because you will want to reach the final level and beat the game. Although, if you are playing for an extended period of time and you die, the urge to sit there for another hour or so is not particularly strong. Each level is different, but it does not differ each time you play.

Overall: Overall, this game is good fun and quite frustrating. Some days you may make it through to a high level, other days you may die within the first three. Concentration and determination and strong factors in the ability to complete Silkworm. If you like sidescrolling shooters, I recommend this game.

Silkworm Rocks

Wow what can I say about this game, playing by yourself is fun and playing with a friend is even more fun. Sometime you can get very far and sometimes you can't it's tons of fun and you get a routine when you play each level. I just let the game start because I love the start-up music, without cheats I get very far in the game because I've played it for so long. A Real keeper.
