The Classicamiga Forum is moving
Written by Harrison

Our forums are currently moving to a new dedicated server. This will give us the resources the forum needs to run smoothly, and the dedicated server will allow us to expand further into the future and offer everyone a nicer experience.

To bring you all up to speed, the classicamiga forums have been offline since Monday 16th Feb. This was due to the forum becoming too resource hungry for the hosting account they were currently being hosted on, meaning I have had to look for a better solution to host them. And after some research I decided the best solution was to move the forum to a new dedicated server so that the resources and hosting of the forum could be fully managed by myself.

I am hoping that the new server will be ready within the next couple of days.

In the mean time if you have any questions please post them using the comments below.

Thank you.

Harrison.

Switching host
I've decided the best solution will be to move to a new hosting company to host the CA forums. The current hosting company, Bluehost, have recently been over subscribing their shared hosting plans and this has been causing excessive server loads. Something they now seem to be blaming the CA forum for, even though we have been running fine on their servers since 2006!

If anyone has suggestions for a good vBulletin forum host please email me, or post the suggestions here so I can investigate. I've so far been recommended a UK hosting company that offer specialised vBulletin hosting plans, and this could be a good solution. I've emailed them some questions and am waiting for them to get back to me.

Whatever happens, Harrison, you can guarantee we will follow you everywhere!

Just hope that this problem gets resolved for you soon, but whatever the decision, I will certainly see what I can find out re hosting sites.

Hope the problem gets solved soon. Best of luck, Harrison! If it is costly to move, please give me a sign, and I'll try to chip in.

Hi there Chewieshmoo! While the forum is down, I guess a few of us will be using the chat on the main site a bit more. smilies/smiley.gif Try logging on in the evening. Yesterday we where three people in the chat.

Options open to us
After exploring the different hosting options for the forum, talking directly with a couple of hosting companies (globalgold's pre-sales customer service was great btw), we now have the following options open to use for hosting the forum.

1, Use a Globalgold vBulletin vb200 hosting account. - This offers dedicated vB hosting tailored to optimising the running of vB. However there are some restrictions on the hosting package which may limit expansion and what we are able to do in the future. They manage the vBulletin installation, so I wouldn't have complete control over it and I don't really like that idea.

2, A dedicated server. - I can get a second dedicated server to host the forum at a discounted price. This would be the perfect (and preferred) solution as the forum would be self contained on its own server, with no other accounts using it and no other databases using cpu time. Plus I would have full control over the hosting, setup and management of the server and the vB installation.

This second option for a second CA dedicated server is the ideal option that I would like to go for. However it would cost £29.95 a month and I would need some help to pay for the costs of this second server from everyone because it would be too expensive on top of the existing dedicated server (used for this main site) for me to try and pay for both together. In return though I could offer the ability for you all to use the second server for your own hosting needs, and to register and get cheap domain names.

I'm also opting for the 2nd solution, and you still can count on my monthly donation.

Setup of the new server begins!
Great news! I placed an order today for a new dedicated server for the CA forums and it is now in the process of being setup and configures.

I will let you all know when it is fully operational. smilies/smiley.gif
