Forum is down [out of my control]

The classicamiga forum is down.  I came home (on the 15th) to discover this and then found the whole of the invisionfree.com network is currently down too.

I did some digging and found the Invisionfree staff members latest blog entry that reads as follows:

November 15, 2006

All those posts finally blew a gasket. :p

Yoda: Seth break the Support Board? It’s not loading for me.
Brandon: s1 is broken
Yoda: how long til it unbreaks
Brandon:a few hours minimum

Ah the chaos that ensues afterwards should be interesting.

And of course:

NO we are not Upgrading to Zetaboards. The Server’s got a problem. Personally, I blame Seth. :p

The s1 server is the original and main Invisionfree server, and classicamiga's forum runs from the original s1 server as we created the forum whilst InvisionFree was in beta testing so have been with them since the start.

The s1 server being down also means it has brought down their own support Invisionfree site and support forums too, hence the "chaos that ensues" quote above.

Lets hope they can get it back up and running as soon as possible.

Update:  The forum is now showing the message "This domain is not setup for an invisionfree board".  This message is also displaying for all other invisionfree boards including the main support one so it seems to be a generic message.

Also, as we can't post in the forum ATM I'll put it here.

-The comments are using my real name rather than my alias. I'd prefer JT.
-Should the "write comment" text be clickable? I clicked here at first, especially as it was in big text next to the smaller clicky "show/hide comment form"

That was pretty bad news. Let us hope they will get it up and running again as soon as possible. As JT said, having the chat room is a good thing during such emergencies.

It's back up
They have managed to get the board back up. I had to access it via the original invisionfree.com url to gain access and relink the forum.classicamiga.com url. This is now working.

On the Invisionfree support forums they now have a message saying it was a harddrive failure and they have now fixed it and restored as much data as possible.

Annoyingly it's lost all the template settings from the board so I am in the process of fixing this as we speak.

Invisionfree also warn that some more recent posts may be missing, but they are working on finding any missing data so they may reappear in the next few days.

Quite annoying all the same.

A further update. Many posts since March 06 have been lost smilies/sad.gif

Invisionfree are currently trying to restore them, along with the broken images and site templates. I will therefore wait longer before going through the whole process of setting up the forum template again from scratch.

What an annoying situation. It seems that all admin board settings made since March 06 are all wiped so I'm having to go through and admin panel trying to remember all the changes I've made since March (like I'm going to remember everything!). The template structure I created in September was therefore obviously gone too so I've just had to code that again from scratch. Luckily I'm paranoid so I had a saved copy of the site's style sheet locally so it was just a copy and paste to get that back. But I had forgotten to backup the actual html template changes so I'm having to go through that and try to restore it to it's current way of working.

I hope they do have more recent backups of our forum posts as losing everything back to March would be quite a big blow and make me quite unhappy.

It will mean even edits to existing posts such as the forum membership levels is lost so it's currently showing the original old post with the old membership levels listed. If they don't come back I will have to edit them all again from scratch! smilies/shocked.gif

The problem when running a forum that is being hosted for free is you don't really have any comeback if such loses occur which is making me consider hosting our forums myself so I have complete control over the forum setup and backups.

I've just realised many of our forums are currently completely missing too. The whole of Off Topic is gone!, as is the Fun Stuff section which had the Poster of the Month and Quiz forums in.

I really hope it gets restored properly.
