Nice to hear, hopefully it will be running again by next week. I will be off until Tuesday, so when I come back it should be running again. - Demon Cleaner

Finally got it working!

Some great news! After using both the server host's support and the vBulletin support I managed to work out how to get vB to connect to the database and this is now working.

I do still have some other issues I need to fix and hope to have then sorted out tomorrow. But it is now getting closer to the forum being back online. :) - Harrison

Some setup problems

I'm currently having some problems with the setup of the new server.

I've fully tested the backup of the forum on a different test server and it restored perfectly, without a single issue. However there seems to be a unique database configuration on the new server which vBulletin doesn't like, and is currently refusing to connect to the database, even though it is setup and fully installed.

I'm currently in communication with the server's hosting company trying to sort this out and work out why it won't connect to the database. I've even setup some other database driven sites on the same server yesterday, including Joomla, to see if it was a mysql issue, but those installed perfectly and ran without issue. All very strange.

I'm really hoping I can fix this before the end of the week. - Harrison

Great news! I now have fully access to the server and am currently uploading everything.

So fingers crossed the forum will be up and running on there tomorrow. I now just need to figure out a couple of database configurations on the new server. - Harrison

I'm still waiting to gain full access to the server. Fingers crossed it will be in the next day or so.

They did say it could take up to a week to completely setup and configure the server before it was ready to use, which would take us to this Wednesday. - Harrison

The new server is now up and running. I just have to wait for the IP and Domain DNS settings to propagate now so that we can actually access it and then we will be back up and running. :) - Harrison

Great news! I placed an order today for a new dedicated server for the CA forums and it is now in the process of being setup and configures.

I will let you all know when it is fully operational. :) - Harrison

Options open to us

After exploring the different hosting options for the forum, talking directly with a couple of hosting companies (globalgold's pre-sales customer service was great btw), we now have the following options open to use for hosting the forum.

1, Use a Globalgold vBulletin vb200 hosting account. - This offers dedicated vB hosting tailored to optimising the running of vB. However there are some restrictions on the hosting package which may limit expansion and what we are able to do in the future. They manage the vBulletin installation, so I wouldn't have complete control over it and I don't really like that idea.

2, A dedicated server. - I can get a second dedicated server to host the forum at a discounted price. This would be the perfect (and preferred) solution as the forum would be self contained on its own server, with no other accounts using it and no other databases using cpu time. Plus I would have full control over the hosting, setup and management of the server and the vB installation.

This second option for a second CA dedicated server is the ideal option that I would like to go for. However it would cost £29.95 a month and I would need some help to pay for the costs of this second server from everyone because it would be too expensive on top of the existing dedicated server (used for this main site) for me to try and pay for both together. In return though I could offer the ability for you all to use the second server for your own hosting needs, and to register and get cheap domain names. - Harrison

Switching host

I've decided the best solution will be to move to a new hosting company to host the CA forums. The current hosting company, Bluehost, have recently been over subscribing their shared hosting plans and this has been causing excessive server loads. Something they now seem to be blaming the CA forum for, even though we have been running fine on their servers since 2006!

If anyone has suggestions for a good vBulletin forum host please email me, or post the suggestions here so I can investigate. I've so far been recommended a UK hosting company that offer specialised vBulletin hosting plans, and this could be a good solution. I've emailed them some questions and am waiting for them to get back to me. - Harrison
